Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3:9-17 (HCSB)

For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field, God’s building. According to God’s grace that was given to me, I have laid a foundation as a skilled master builder, and another builds on it. But each one must be careful how he builds on it. For no one can lay any other foundation than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, each one’s work will become obvious, for the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work. If anyone’s work that he has built survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned up, it will be lost, but he will be saved; yet it will be like an escape through fire.

Don’t you yourselves know that you are God’s sanctuary and that the Spirit of God lives in you? If anyone destroys God’s sanctuary, God will destroy him’ for God’s sanctuary is holy, and that is what you are.

What does it mean that we are God’s sanctuary?

  • People were created to be God’s image (Genesis 1-2)
    • Because people are sinful and have chosen to rebel against God, God’s Holy Spirit lives within the believer so that we might reflect God.
    • We cannot be the image of God without God
    • Being God’s sanctuary or God’s temple simply means that God lives within us and reveals Himself through us.

What does it mean that we are God’s coworkers?

  • How do we work with God?
    • If God lives within us and reveals Himself through us, then we literally act on God’s behalf in this world.
    • When we do good deeds, we do them in God’s name and with the gifts that God has given us.
    • We are to be concerned with the same work that God is concerned with.
  • What does it mean that we are God’s field or God’s building?
    • It means simply that God is working to build us up according to His plan, which is always greater than our plans.
    • It seems, too, that Paul here is addressing the church as a whole and not individuals because he goes on to say that each person in the church builds on to the church.
    • The only foundation is Christ. Any belief system or system of thought, any religion that is not based on Christ is false. Why?
      • If the Bible is true, and I believe that it is, then everything was made through Christ and for Christ (John 1).
      • Christ is one with God and is the only way by which people can be redeemed and returned to God.
      • This should not be a surprise. Hebrew scripture, which can be traced to the beginning, told of a king who would come to save the world from destruction.
      • Any system based on any other foundation cannot be true if Christ is the true foundation.

Using our own materials to build?

  • As we set an example in our lives, teach one another encourage one another and build each other up, we build onto the church and we build on the foundation of Christ. This is something that God has trusted us with. How do we build rightly?
  • God has given us instructions (THE BIBLE)
  • The Bible is our authority for life. We should not act, teach, encourage or build each other up in a way that contradicts the Bible.
  • We are to live a Biblical life, not a fortune cookie life.
    • Some popular philosophies that contradict the Bible:
      • “You need to do something for yourself.”
      • “You need to go out, get some experience and make some mistakes.”
      • “You only live once (YOLO).”
      • “Surround yourself only with people who will lift you higher.” –Oprah
      • “Do all you can to make your dreams come true.” –Osteen
    • All of the work we do that is not motivated by Christ as the foundation or according to the instructions God has given us, will be burned.
    • Only what is truly Godly will survive in the judgment, and rewards will be given for what survives.

So what?

  • Compromise is huge in today’s culture.
    • Everyday people sell out so that they can make it in the world.
    • We want to please God, but we realize that if we do not do things the way that the world wants us to do them we may not make it in the world.
    • So, the one who was once a Christian musician begins to cuss in his music, the actress who once loved God begins to take her clothes off in front of the camera, the student lives to make good grades instead of living for Christ and we do all of our work as if we are the ones producing it.
  • When people look at what we have done, they should always see Christ.
    • We do not build with our own materials or according to instructions other than God’s Word.
    • Check everything against scripture and don’t live to make a name for yourself. This is a worthless pursuit because we were designed to bear God’s image.
